Returning to Ourselves

by | Dec 12, 2022

As we approach the end of another year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on our personal journeys, the challenges we’ve faced, and the growth we’ve experienced. One of the most profound insights I encountered recently was a quote by Dr. Gabor Maté, a leader in the field of trauma healing. He said:

“…Returning to ourselves is a road we choose, with all the twists and turns and seeming cul-de-sacs that come with following—or indeed, forging—an uncertain path. In my experience, we are never as close as we think and never as far as we fear.”

These words hit me deeply. They remind us that the path to self-discovery and growth is rarely linear. It’s filled with uncertainty, unexpected turns, and sometimes moments of feeling lost. Yet, in all of this, we find opportunities to learn, to grow, and to become more deeply connected to our true selves.

The Power of Imperfection

The essence of Inner Mastery is not about achieving perfection, as many of us may assume. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It’s about embracing the imperfection of life. Often, we hold ourselves to standards that are too high, expecting life and ourselves to be perfect. But the reality is that imperfection is not a flaw—it’s part of the greater picture.

Mastery, as I’ve learned, isn’t about making the world fit into a perfect mold; it’s about trusting that the imperfections and challenges we face are integral to our journey. When we allow ourselves to trust this, we become better equipped to handle the uncertainties that arise.

True mastery is about being able to navigate life’s challenges with grace, adaptability, and an open heart. It’s about realizing that life doesn’t have to be flawless to be meaningful and that our struggles are often what lead us to the most profound growth.

Trusting Yourself: The Core of Inner Mastery

Inner Mastery is about connecting with your essence—your truth and heart—and trusting your ability to navigate whatever life presents. When you have a deep connection to yourself, you’re not at the mercy of fear and limiting beliefs that so often hold us back.

This connection to your own inner knowing empowers you to embrace life as it unfolds, even when things feel uncertain or overwhelming. It’s about knowing that you have the capacity to face whatever comes your way, and that, no matter how tough things get, you have the resources within you to overcome them.

When you’re in touch with your essence, fear and negativity don’t control your actions or decisions. Instead, you become a conscious participant in your own life, learning how to manage your emotional responses and thought patterns. As we gain awareness of these patterns, we can begin to make conscious choices that align with our highest good.

Becoming Aware: The Gateway to Freedom and Joy

Awareness is the cornerstone of Inner Mastery. The ability to recognize when we’re triggered emotionally or mentally is a powerful tool in creating lasting change. When we can stay present in the moment and observe what’s happening within us, we give ourselves the freedom to choose our responses, rather than reacting from a place of fear or automatic behavior.

This awareness leads to freedom—a freedom that comes from not being controlled by our thoughts, fears, or past experiences. And with freedom comes joy. As we learn to manage our emotions and reactions, joy becomes more accessible. It doesn’t require perfection or a flawless path; it’s about being in the moment and accepting whatever comes your way with grace and openness.

Moving Forward with Inner Mastery

As you step into the next year, I encourage you to reflect on your journey. Consider the moments of growth, the lessons you’ve learned, and the ways you’ve stepped into your own mastery. If you feel that you’ve been held back by fear or limiting beliefs, know that it’s never too late to change.

Mastery is a lifelong journey, and every step, no matter how small, is an important part of your evolution. By learning to trust yourself and embrace imperfection, you’re already on the path toward greater freedom, joy, and fulfillment.

As we close out this year, remember that the twists and turns are all part of the process. It’s not about being “perfect” or having it all figured out. It’s about being willing to learn, to grow, and to trust in your ability to navigate whatever life presents.
